The moon illuminated the pathway, peeking through branches of trees showing the first signs of spring, and allowing the girl to sneak back onto school grounds without the use of her wand. While she was grateful for the dim light, the girl wasn’t sure she was grateful that she had survived what was supposed to be the grandest night of her life. But in typical Rylann fashion, nothing did.

As she moved further up the path, the castle came into view, and if she stood still she could hear the strains of music drifting through the night air. Rylann was supposed to be there, supporting her sister and Clover, and for the first time, she had an actual date to a ball. Nothing went as planned, though, and she shouldn’t have been surprised when an owl with a howler attached had entered her room moments after Aisling had left, howling about something she had done for money. Money that had paid for new Quidditch supplies for her brother and formal wear for the ball. Money that the sender always squandered away on booze.

Her gown, simple yet elegant, had been left draped across her bed as she headed out of her room, dressed in the jeans and t-shirt she had worn while attempting a hair-do for her sister befitting a champion. Family first, and in this case, Rylann would have to deal with her father first before making an appearance at the ball. That was her intention, at least.

As she had done with Maddox, Rylann used the whomping willow to sneak out of school and head to the shrieking shack where she apparated back to the family home to deal with the problem she created. No one knew that she had left, and she was pretty sure, no one would notice which was just fine by her. By the time she had reached the family home, she had worked up a plan on how to explain to her father so he would understand why she did what she had done, drunk or not. It hadn’t gone as she had planned, though. Nothing ever worked out for Rylann O’Rourke, at least where her parents were concerned.

Tonight was no different as she entered the family home and spotted her father sitting in a chair, whiskey bottle in his hand, the air perfumed with the scent of the cheap swill he liked to drink. It didn’t take long for him to realize she was there and start the same old song and dance that they went through on a weekly basis during holidays at home. Rylann stood her ground at first, explained her side as logically as possible, but the result was the same. Same result as always.

When she finally left, clutching a bag against her chest, the acrid smell of smoke clinging to her skin, clothes and hair, Rylann headed back to the only real home she knew, Hogwarts. As always when she snuck out of school and back in, she was careful not to be noticed, even in her current state. The trip seemed to take longer than on the return trip, but it could have been merely because every movement she made, even breathing, caused shooting pains through her body. And while the bag she carried wasn’t heavy, she struggled with every step back to the gates.

Just inside the main gates, she paused and wiped at the tears that still streamed down her cheeks. She needed a breather, a place to hide out until she could control her emotions and deal with what had happened before heading to the castle and her dorm room instead of to the ball she had desperately wanted to attend. The path leading to the castle left not many hiding places, but she walked on until she couldn’t take another step. Taking shelter next to a tree, Rylann slid down the trunk and leaned her head against it. Time for her to figure out a plan.

Rylann wiped away the tears and took stock of her injuries. One black eye, one busted lip, on ripped shirt, and more bruises on her arms, back and legs. Not too bad after dealing with her father, really. Simple things she could cover with make up and bruise cream if she could get back to her room unnoticed. It was her ribs that caused her the most concern as she wasn’t skilled enough to know if they were bruised or just cracked. Not that she had time to figure it out, though. A plan was forming in her mind. If she could get back to her room to change, pack a few items, she could drop the bag she was holding in Declan’s room and sneak back out of the castle before anyone knew she was gone, or able to call the aurors on her.

Get in and get out, that was her plan. Her first thought had been to act like nothing had happened, to say she had been ill and that’s why she hadn’t attended the ball, but if someone got a look at her, caught a whiff of the acrid smoke still clinging to her, and they would put two and two together rather quickly once the news that her parents were dead and the house had burned down. So she was down to one plan: get in and get out. Rylann had decided to head to Knockturn Alley and start at the brothel early. If she could work a bit and then move on to another brothel, in another country preferably. She wasn’t sure how she was going to pull it off, running from the Ministry and still help out her family, but maybe Pearl would be able to help.

Rylann sighed and wiped her face again, ready to finally make the rest of the journey to the castle. Get in and get out. That was her plan, and so she pushed herself up, grimacing in pain as she went from a sitting position to standing, and pulled the bag against her chest once again to cover the damage. That wasn’t the only reason for the bag, no, it was far more important than that. Declan would need it for him and their brother and sister. Important documents concerning their birth and family information were inside, along with a few drawings each of the younger ones had done of the years and an album of baby photos. Things that Rylann had been secretly collecting over the years while her parents were passed out or fighting.

Once again, she walked down the path, the lights from the castle calling her like a beacon. In and out, she reminded herself as she struggled up the path.

Dressed in the best damn clothes ever on his body, Declan O'Rourke left the hospital wing his heart in his throat as he a gut feeling something wasn't right with the world. He quickened his steps as he took the flight of stairs faster with each turn, even jumping he couldn't wait for the stairs to connect, finally finding a nearby short cut that landed him near the entrance hall. His sister was either not at the ball, or she had sneaked away with Maddox he probably had already found her. Since he hadn't gotten word from her via owl, he decided that the headmaster was on to her or something and it had something to do with Aisling's so called vision.

Vision. What exactly had she seen? All the scenarios that played in Declan's mind as he ran past the entrance to the castle and out into the lawns, were causing him to quicken his steps and run faster. The Averys, where was it that they lived? Hadn't Ailbe mentioned it once or Ginger to him? Right Hogsmeade. He was sure the gates to the school were opened so he went in that direction, surely anyone at the place could tell him where Maddox was if he wasn't there and by default he would find his sister.

And as he ran towards the gates something caught his eye to the side or the path, a simmer of a figure, Declan's legs pushed on to approach the person as he grew closer the shape took form and it caused him to gasp out and run uncontrollably. His sister was stumbling up the path and looked like she was about to pass out, he now fell in front of her grabbing her and sliding onto the grass on his knees to his sister who was covered in blood and bruises. Broken. He grabbed her gingerly his heart pounding in his chest out of breath as tears escaped and he spoke in a terrified tremble, "Oi'm gonna kill him. Rylann, why did yer go home? Wot 'appened?!"

Pulling out his wand the boy started to try to heal her, "Episkey, Episkey, Episkey, Episkey!" He kept repeating himself applying his wand to different areas of her body to stop the blood and bruises from continuing on her delicate body. But no matter how hard he tried he was no expert and at this he now debated on what to do next. His heart raced his thoughts jumbled, "Wot 'appened, Rylann?!" Then there was a man's voice and a strong pair of hands that gingerly touched Rylann's face and began to heal her as well. Declan looked to the side and he spotted Maddox, grateful it wasn't some one else but also worried that he wouldn't know what was happening. "Maddox, please, Oi got dis, go on 'ome. Oi'll take care of 'er." He pleaded with the man who only looked to Declan with a sneer and the look said to back off as he continued to take care of Rylann and fix her up.

Not to beat the tired bush and repeat everything that was said and done in a different way. Basically Maddox Avery was dressed up as an Avery should be dressed for a ball. Waiting on his lady to escort her properly inside. Though as the minutes then hours ticked on and Rylann didn't show, he went in search for her brother asking him if the boy had seen her. To no avail. So what did Maddox do? He searched himself, he even did his usual stalker like routine and stood sentinel by the Slytherin common room waiting to see if she would appear. After a while he went back to the ball and kept his eyes on the O'Rourkes in general waiting to see if Rylann would make an appearance.

The development of the youngest one falling in the ball, and Artemis taking care of her only caused Maddox to frown, he had seen this type of fit before and by the look on Artemis' face he had as well. Being an unspeakable had it's privileges, yet Maddox said nothing nor did he let his presence be known as he followed silently behind them to the hospital wing. Hearing everything and deciphering Ollie's patronus, again another unspeakable privilege the man's eyes went wide. So when Declan slipped away to find Rylann, Maddox followed behind. His thoughts also racing.

There was a fire that much he knew, the O'Rourkes' parents were dead in the fire and Rylann was missing. Oliver clearly wanted to know where the girl was to delivery the news to the entire family, where was she? With those thoughts Declan's steps quickened as did Maddox's. Before he knew it they were near the kissing gates of the entrance of the school. As Declan approached his sister, Maddox kept his distance but upon seeing the moon reflect on the blood he ran to her as well and knelt down beside her, his heart beating uncontrollably in his chest as he placed his hand on her face gently. Growling at Declan to back off he used his own wand to conjure up his own magic and heal her better.

Scooping her up in his arms now, the man walked back to the castle and straight into the Slytherin dorm area with her, "Give the fucking password, Declan!" He growled at the boy, who obliged, "Don't talk yet Rylann." Giving her an order as he now walked in with her and Declan and took her to Declan's dorm room placing her on his bed. "Sorry I can't go into girl's dorms." Very trivial and he didn't care right now as he sat on the side besides her and began to heal her more and clean her up. "You are going to lay right here. You have fallen ill do you understand, Rylann?" He looked straight at her eyes and then he looked to Declan his brow raised, "You are to go back to the hospital wing and let them know she's in your dorm not feeling well. Got it? You ran into me and I said she wasn't well and went to lay down that I was just leaving. Do you understand Declan?"

Declan looked hesitant and he frowned looking like he wanted to stay back and hear more. "You'll know the facts later. Trust me, I only want to care for her. I would die for her. Go before they get suspicious boy!" he growled at Declan shaking his head and waited for the boy to turn and leave before his attention was back on Rylann and he put his finger to her lips, "Don't talk. Listen. Nod or shake your head in response." He knew that if she dare talk now she might start to cry and at this Maddox wasn't sure he could handle his own emotions nor would he be held responsible if he went out to kill whoever it was that did this to her. Little did he know that Rylann had already done that herself, "Where you at home? Are you still hurting..... physically?" With only those two questions answered with a simple yes or no, Maddox would know everything piecing it all together. It paid being observant and quiet.

Get in and get out. That was her plan and those were the words that repeated in her head with every step she took. That’s what kept her moving, the need to get in and out of school, and then, out of Hogwarts in general. She needed clothes and her brother needed the bag she was clutching to her chest. It was that simple, but then again, nothing was ever simple for Rylann, and as she struggled up the path, her breath catching in her throat, she could hear the music growing louder, and wished she could have gone to the ball. Silly thoughts for a silly girl.

Each step took her closer and each breath had her hissing in pain, making the journey longer than she had wished. Rylann was so focused on her mission, to get in and back out without being noticed, that at first she didn’t notice someone on the grounds, running towards her. It wasn’t until Declan was before her, reaching for her that she realized that she was no longer alone. “Yer canny. Why? Da sent me a 'owler an' oi 'ad ter go” Rylann licked her bottom lip, the taste of blood mixing with the scent of smoke from the fire, leaving her with the urge to gag. But that wasn’t Rylann. She wasn’t one to gag or cry in front of anyone, even Declan, though this time she was tempted.

“Stop. Oi 'ill take care av it meself.” Healing was her job unless the damage was too much for her and then they saw a healer, which didn’t happen often. With a sigh, Rylann blinked back the tears as she opened her mouth to tell Declan what happened, but then she thought twice, not sure how much she should tell him. Would he hate her for what she had done? Rylann wasn’t sure and didn’t even have a chance to say anything as another hand touched her face and she jerked her head back. Maddox Avery. The sight of him sent chills down her spine, the fear of going to Azkaban welling up. “Ye 'ere ter arrest me?” Did he even have the power to arrest her? The girl had no idea, but it was quite possible even if they were dating.

“Shoite.” There was no getting in and out now, now she was stuck between the proverbial rock and a hard place. And when Maddox picked her up as he had done so in the past, she hissed out in pain, the tears threatening to pour down her cheeks, Rylann knew that she was screwed. No escape. “Oi can walk, yer nu.” It might have been slow going and painful, but she could walk and quite possibly escape without the others finding her. But things never worked out as Rylann planned. Never ever. Even now, Maddox wouldn’t let her go, growled orders at her poor brother, and told her not to talk. Rock and a hard place.

Rylann kept her mouth shut, her lips pressed together in a tight line as she held the bag against her chest even now. That was until Maddox brought up the hospital wing and she looked to Declan. “Who is in de 'ospital win'?” Someone, family member most likely, were in the hospital wing and Maddox was sending Declan away without giving her an answer. Nothing EVER went as planned for Rylann! And with that thought she sunk back against the pillows, her lips pursing as Declan left and Maddox started to speak again. Merlin, how she hated the fact that after Maddox found out, she would be gone, and Declan would be forced to deal with all the family things on his own. It wasn’t fair to him and she knew that. Sighing, Rylann focused on a spot across the room, just left of Maddox’s shoulder and listened carefully. He didn’t want her to speak, but he wanted answers. That was something she could do. And with the first question, she bit her lip and nodded. She had snuck out once again to deal with their father, the mess she had made, but no one needed to know that, especially not Maddox. But as usual, it hadn’t gone as planned. Something she should have realized long before now. It was Maddox’s second question that had her biting her lip again, the tears welling up at the memory of her father kicking her in the ribs right before he decided that he wanted more. Nodding once again, Rylann clutched the bag tighter to her chest and looked away.

She had questions of her own, this much he knew and as bad as he felt for sending her brother away it was important to keep up the ruse of all this. If Maddox hunch was correct, the man was usually correct because of how observant he was towards other humans; she would need an alibi and Maddox would be it without a second thought. Had he not chosen to be an unspeakable because of the peace and solitude he would have made an excellent auror, but he liked where he worked now. And he would provide questions to her answers, he would do just that, but right now he had to get answers from her.

As Rylann nodded to his first question, Maddox frowned now taking in the sight of her, he deduced really quickly with what he had overheard in the hospital wing and seeing the state of her. Actually come to think of it the many times she flinched around him now started to play in quick successions in his mind like a damn penesive memory. Maddox's eyes went wide and he gasped knowing full well what had occurred just by the state of her. Abuse. It explained so much, no words needed to be passed between them no explanations, Maddox could see it now it all just fit into place, she was like a mother to her siblings and that was why she was so guarded.

When she nodded and hissed to his other question, Maddox's frowned went to a sadness as his eyes got watery and he started to tear up. His heart was beating rapidly in his chest and he felt her pain as he ran his hands on her face and grabbed his wand to try and fix her up. Growling at the bruises and cuts on her body, "Rylann, baby, it's ok I know what happened. You don't have to say. I'll get you out of here." His voice cracked as he spoke and more tears erupted from his eyes as he felt her pain and continued to try and patch her up as best as he could before he looked to her seriously. "There's no need to run or hide, ok? I'm getting my house elf now to patch you up so you could head down to the hospital wing and see your sister. Artemis Fowl, Ailbe's father is going to give you all some news. You will act shock. Do you understand? It's not something you don't know. There was a house fire, your parents are dead. Your sister had a vision. No one knows what she saw that is why they're in the hospital wing. However the headmaster knows about the fire he just got word and told Artemis to let you lot know. But he won't say till you're present. No one knows Rylann. No one but you and me. And possibly Aisling. So once she wakes up, you and I will leave the castle, and I will keep you safe. I promise."

With that he called his house elf, who appeared at his side and did as he was told, using his elf magic to heal Rylann as best as possible and cleaning her up good as new so she was able to go to the hospital wing.

Azkaban. That was surely her next stop now that Maddox had seen her and once the news spread about the fire, there would be no other option. He was smart, he could put two and two together. Hell, Declan would figure it out as well. She was going to spend the rest of her life in a Dementor filled prison because she didn’t let her father kill her like he had done in Aissy’s pre-task. Merlin knew that the images from Aissy’s ordeal had flashed through Ry’s mind as soon as he had knocked her down and tried to crawl on her. So she had fought back this time, not letting her father do any more damage than he had and she had survived. Her parents, well, that was another story.

Her story was hers and she wasn’t sure if she could ever tell anyone, especially not Maddox, as he had learned too many of their family secrets already. But when Maddox reached for her again and tried to fix more of her injuries, she felt the tears slip down her cheeks. “Shoite.” Finally, Rylann turned her head towards Maddox, and licked her lips. “Yer don't nu waaat 'appened. Me brah'der is gonna 'av quesshuns.” And Declan wouldn’t let up until he received answers even if he didn’t like them. Bless Declan for never giving up. Rylann was proud of him for so many things, that being just one of them.

The fact that Maddox was still fussing over her, trying to heal her injuries began to freak her out, and she moved to stop him, but stopped when he spoke again. Instructions, really. “Aisling i s in de 'ospital win'? Bloody ‘ell, Maddox. Ah've got ter go clap 'er.” With a sigh, Rylann laid back again, his words hitting home. The headmaster already knew the fate of her parents and if anyone saw her like this, smelled her, they would know she had been near a fire. “And Declan when he hears! Shoite!” Rylann closed her eyes as the house elf appeared, finally pulling back the bag to be able to reach her ribs, and exposing her ripped t-shirt. “Gran' so, Oi 'ill act gobsmacked. Declan 'ill figure it oyt. Maybe Aissy. Den we go ter yisser place an' waaat?” If she wasn’t arrested or expelled, then she still couldn’t graduate? And how was she supposed to take care of her family? So many questions, so many fears, and there was Maddox attempting to fix the mess she made.

Maddox snorted, of course he knew what happened. He had it all figured out, shaking his head the unspeakable continued to fix her up as best as possible. He nodded knowing full well that Declan would have questions. But he continued his ministrations of fixing her up as best as his knowledge on healing magic went. The man nodded with a frown to her question about Aisling being in the hospital wing, but he insisted now as he continued to attend to her. His explanation though had her freaking out about Declan and she wanted out to see both her siblings.

At this Maddox frowned and pushed her shoulder back slightly to watch as the house elf appeared and fixed her up. When she moved the bag she was clutching out of the way, Maddox's eyes went wide and he felt like he was going to be sick. Standing up as his house elf healed her and cleaned up. The man was shaking, his hands balled up in fists as he clenched his jaw and his eyes stayed on the nasty deep laceration to her ribs, one of them was poking out and he looked at her in awe wondering how the hell she was still alive.

Her tiny frame being able to take this type of abuse and make it out alive. Clenching his jaw he looked to her seriously and frowned, "you're finishing fucking school. And you lot can stay with me till I get you a new place. I won't take no for a bloody answer. And I swear to fucking hades had you not killed him I would have killed him myself!" His anger wasn't subsiding, he was angry at her fucking parents at her father who he only figured out on his own that it was probably the man who had fucking done it. After all he had seen the pre-recorded feed of the EHC and seen Aisling's task.

It was easy to put two and two together, that image was playing fresh in his mind he had only seen it that very morning. Breathing out deeply he had to calm himself because he wanted to punch the next asshole that looked at Rylann funny. "Hurry up elf!" He even barked an order to his elf who he was always so kind to. Finally the elf finished and left. At this Maddox took a look at her and grabbed her hand to help her up to sit on the bed, sitting besides her the man gave her a once over to make sure she looked in place. Her eyes told another story though as he frowned and licked his lips wishing he could take that pain away. "I'm gonna take care of you, freckles, I'm gonna take care of all of you." he caressed her face gently and kissed the top of her head, then stood up and held out his hand to her. "Come on, we'll tell them I haven't left yet."

O’Rourkes were a lot of things: poor, foul-mouthed, and stubborn. Those weren’t their only qualities, but the ones that the average person only saw. In fact, O’Rourkes were many things including loving, funny, brave, and strong. Those were qualities that had helped them survive a lifetime of abuse at the hand of their father and explained why Rylann had picked herself up off of the floor, left her unconscious father on the floor, gather the important documents, and then set the house on fire. Stubborn and strong, Rylann had shut down emotionally as she watched the house burn brightly against the night sky as she hid among the trees and watched as no one came to help at first.

Stubborn was the only reason why Rylann had made it back to school, bound and determined to change her damn clothes and make sure Declan had the bag of important things. The only reason. So when she finally moved the bag to expose the ripped shirt courtesy of her da, she noticed how bad her injuries were. “Feck dats gross.” All in all, it was the worst injury that any of the kids had endured, but it still didn’t fully register with Rylann. Her face paled considerably as she looked on, the realization hitting home that her ribs weren’t just bruised or cracked, but broken and gross thanks to dear old dad. “Must 'av popped it on de trip back.” The rib, jutting out and bloodied, was enough of a distraction to dry up the tears that had been flowing freely. Or maybe, Rylann had finally cracked?

Cracked was a definite possibility as Rylann reached out to touch the bone sticking out only to have her hand pushed away by the elf that was in a frenzy of a healing. Shocked, Rylann nodded and let him do his work, surprised at how adept the little thing was at knitting the bone and repairing her skin. Once again she reached out to touch the spot only to stop when Maddox answered her, her eyes traveling up his body and stopping when her eyes met his. “Take a number, Maddox. Oi'm juicy sure me brah'der wanted first dibs.” But neither one of them would get the chance. Rylann had taken care of it and both her parents were now dead. Merlin, there was something wrong with her, the way she spoke, the way she didn’t seem to understand exactly what she had done. Maybe it was shock or maybe she really had cracked. Either way, Rylann was glad that it was finally over, that the man that tortured her and her siblings for years, and the woman who never once tried to stop him, were no more.

The elf had finished his work, even repairing her shirt so that when she sat up, she looked like herself as long as you didn’t look too closely. Her body still ached as Maddox pulled her up, but no worse than anything she had experienced before. But it was Maddox’s words that really hit home, that made Rylann grimace. He had no idea how she worked, any of them for that matter. “O’Rourke’s ake care av themselves. Oi take care av me family an' we don't chucker charity, Maddox.” Which was part of the reason that things had gone haywire that night, the photographs that she had taken and been paid for had set off the chain of events that transpired. Sighing, Rylann took his hand, stood and headed towards the door. “Gran’. Oi nade ter clap Aisling.” And speak to her brother. Would Maddox understand if he knew the truth and would her siblings forgive her for everything that happened?

Maddox could instantly tell by her responses to his statements that she was in shock of some sort. He only hoped that she would hold it together long enough to get through everything when they got back to the hospital wing and Artemis delivered the news. He was certain her brother would know right away as soon as he found out. Because of this he know felt awful in sending the boy away. Chewing on his lip as he watched Rylann trying to poke at her own wound.

The injury and her disregard for it made him feel a bit sick but he toughed it out and kept his eyes on her trying to assess the emotional damage which ran deep. It was apparent in her eyes. The frown on his face was apparent when he offered to care for her and her siblings and she turned him down. At this Maddox remained pensive trying to formulate the right words for Rylann to understand. Once again Maddox found he couldn't speak like his usual self around Rylann. "Damn it Rylann, it's not fucking charity. I'm your fucking boyfriend. Let me take care of you!"

With those words he helped her up gingerly to her feet and let her lean on him, "Fine, let's go then." He wasn't angry at her, he was angry at her fucking parents for being the scum of the earth. They had a talented, beautiful and very caring daughter they clearly didn't give two shits about. And now she was being burden with having to pretend some more. Living with the fact that she had committed a crime against an abusive father and or mother, she was right. Maddox didn't know the whole story. Yet that pre-task of his sister's painted a pretty picture for him. "I saw the pre-task this morning," he frowned as he was helping her out of the dorm and to get to the hospital wing.

If she didn't get that he knew after everything he had said, she was really in shock or not processing this whole evening. But her siblings were clearly on her mind as he let it slide and decided he would be the silent but strong Maddox he could be. Maybe just taking her to the hospital and patching her up was all she needed. He would provide that damn alibi for her and bow out of the situation so as not to make her feel she was obligated to him. She held no obligations to him, Maddox needed her to know this. "I'll take you there, provide your alibi and shove off, ok?"

They were a stubborn and proud lot even when faced with life changing events, like now. Rylann wasn’t in a proper mindset of what was to come and what her family might need with the exception of knowing that she needed a job to take care of them and that she needed to stay out of prison to do so. Those things would have to wait until she could see her little sister and make sure that she would survive. Aissy had already been through too much in her short life with their family problems, plus the EHC, and now, she had a vision, possibly of what Rylann had done. But in the end, Rylann hadn’t been able to process how she would be able to take care of her siblings until Maddox pointed out that it wasn’t charity, not really. Though, it would be hard for her to let anyone take care of her or her family. She nodded, slowly, not sure how to respond for now.

Her body ached and her thoughts continued to race from one thing to the next as he helped her up, her blue eyes wide as saucers as they met his brown ones. She needed to see her sister and brothers, make sure they were safe, but part of her wanted to tell them that she saw her rib pointing out and she almost was able to touch it if the house elf hadn’t pushed her hand away. How many times in her life would she be able to do something like that? And her siblings would either freak out or find it cool, depending on the sib. Aissy, she might appreciate it most, but telling her was out of the question, not after the vision she had and whatever she had seen. Her bottom lip trembled and she nodded, time to see her sister and deal with what she had done.

The moment that Maddox sprung the news about the pre-task, she wavered, her body swaying slightly. He knew, and yet, he hadn’t run from her and her family. Or maybe Maddox didn’t know that Aissy’s part of the task was their reality, but with an altered outcome. Up until that night, her Da hadn’t tried to assault her in that way, so when he had tried, flashbacks from the pre-task came flooding back and left Rylann in a new place where she fought back instead of giving up. “Den yer nu. It wus a lot loike dat except Oi'm still alive.” Close, but not exactly the same. Her Da didn’t get a chance to do exactly the same because instead of curling into a ball and waiting for the beating to end, praying that he would lose steam or pass out, Rylann had fought back. It had dawned on her that if her Da had succeeded, killed her in the end, then Aisling would be his next target and Rylann wouldn’t let that happen.

Rylann turned and pressed her forehead to his chest, her heart heavy. Maddox hadn’t left her, not yet, but he was going to. “You're leavin'? Jaysus, why?” Feck, she was so confused. First he wanted to take care of her and then he was leaving her alone. The back and forth was too much for her right now. Rylann wasn’t sure what she needed besides making sure her family was okay as she wasn’t used to have someone to support her. Then again, Maddox said he was leaving so she still was on her own.

The fact that she was standing here still alive spoke volumes of the kind of heart this woman had. She was strong even when the world was beating her down. Maddox held her close, tenderly against him as he frowned at her confession, "I know, I swear to you Rylann I was going to propose to let you all stay with me this summer." After seeing that pre-recorded tape of the EHC Maddox had a lot of thoughts plaguing him. Also the urge to kill the man with his bare hands as well. But Rylann had beat him to it, perhaps Aisling's task was what did it.

As Rylann pressed her head against his chest, Maddox kissed the top of it and frowned at her words, his heart racing as he sighed and his face soften. "Because I don't want you to feel obligated to me, Rylann. I don't want to get in the way. Your family needs you and I know there's gonna be a lot of high emotions running around tonight. I don't want to interfere. I can wait outside of the wing if you need me, if that's what you wish?" Licking his lips Maddox pulled back and searched her eyes.

Making sure every little cut and bruise wasn't showing on her face, his caressed her face tenderly and gave her a pained smile. "Let's go get this over with, ya? Your siblings need you. You're their rock." Maddox wasn't sure how they would take his presence there, but he would make sure to hang back and disappear if need be. The last thing he wanted was to interfere with her family as much as he wanted to take care of Rylann, he didn't want to seem like he was controlling her in any way. Because that was the last thing on his mind.

It was a miracle the oldest boy, Declan had even listened to what Maddox had said to him before. Perhaps he used his common sense putting two and two together, that all Maddox was trying to do was take care of the situation. Licking his lips Maddox frowned, "I'm sorry I sent your brother away. I was only trying to help."

While Aisling’s task had laid heavy on her mind while her Da was beating her and attempting to mimic what had happened in the pre-task, it had also dawned on Rylann that once she graduated (if she survived the night) she would be far away from her brothers and sister and unable to protect them. Either by death or distance, Rylann wouldn’t be able to protect them, especially Aisling from the father that never quite understood how to be a parent and that helped spur on her own rage and fight back. “Al' av us? Cos av Da?” The news surprised her and made her think twice about Maddox. He wasn’t going to run away, but would have helped them. A first for the O’Rourke children.

But then he decided he would leave after dropping her at the hospital wing, once again confusing her on how relationships went. Did you walk away from the one you cared about when you probably needed them most? Rylann wasn’t sure, but she did realize she wanted Maddox there and that she did indeed need his support. “Waaat if oi nade yer? Oi canny chucker dis alone.” Those were words that she had never said before, not once and yet, she said them now and meant them. Rylann O’Rourke needed someone to be there for her.

Maddox was right, though, they needed to get it over with so she could see her sister and to let her brothers know she was fine. Physically fine, but emotionally and mentally, only time would tell. Rylann wiped at her eyes, drying the last of the tears that threatened to reappear before nodding slowly. “Aye, oi nade ter be dare for dem.” Whatever might happen, she needed to make sure Aisling would be okay and that Declan could handle whatever happened next. Seamus, well, he would be there for the others.

Rylann let go of Maddox and leaned against him, ready to make the trip to the hospital wing. “It wus foine'. Someone needed ter be wi' Aisling. Yer did, love.” Rylann squared her shoulders and took a step towards the door, as ready as she could ever be to face what was about to happen. Her heart ached for Declan, though, knowing that he would possibly have to take over everything if things did not go well.

Maddox nodded, of course all of them, he had realized it all after seeing that pre-task. He cared for Rylann so much and her family was important to her, he could tell just by who she was. So therefore by default they were important to him. As crazy as they all were they were a great bunch of kids the lot of them. Maddox wasn't about to turn his back on anyone regardless if he was in a relationship with Rylann or not. They were friends first, the relationship was second and now well now if she would allow him, "family. You're my family now. All of you." He replied softly.

Maddox licked his lips and smiled at Rylann snugging her close but gently, "I'm not going anywhere. I'll do whatever you wish me to do, freckles." Yes he wanted to give her the space she needed but if she needed him Maddox was there without a doubt he only didn't want to get in her way or her family's way. The man nodded agreeing she really did need to be there and he felt ashamed still about sending Declan away.

Sighing he gripped her gently against him and helped her to the door and exit out of the common room. He made sure that all doors were opened and he even assisted her in getting out of the common room door. When it came time to climb the stairs, Maddox scooped her up in his arms and carried her the rest of the way. Refusing to let her down even if she protested. Finally outside the hospital doors he set her gently onto her feet and gripped her hand, "Ready?" He made sure to give her a once over, "Just tell them you had cramps or something like that. Men tend to shy away from things like that and don't ask too many questions. Hopefully your brother will have not said much." he whispered to her and waited till she gave the go ahead to open the doors to the hospital wing.
