So it had come to this. Hiding out in a small stone cottage in the middle of the Scottish Highlands. The young recluse was often alone out here, and other times, she had her ally. The boy (slowly becoming man) had been her twin brother's best friend throughout their school years. Being as close as the siblings were, it usually meant that any friend of one was a friend of the other. Levi had been something more than that, though. He had been besotted with Lyra for some years. Lyra on the otherhand, did not make that fact easy for him. The times he had even come close to admitting something stronger than friendship, Lyra would stifle him before he had the chance. Whenever he made an effort that everyone else claimed was obvious, Lyra would somehow...always...trivialize it. This wasn't because she didn't like the boy...quite the opposite. Lyra struggled with his attentiveness at the best of times. The blonde slytherin had never felt confident enough in herself to allow anyone else to like her that way. It made her feel awkward and confused and they were feelings she wanted to eliminate because they made her weak. It wasn't a good look for an Avery. Constantly brushing off Levi's advances, she was very aware that he would always be there for her. To outsiders, this looked brutal. Maybe that she was using and abusing him. She probably was in a very unintentional way, but deep down, she really liked him. He was the one she ran to whenever things were getting too much and being the daughter of a Fowl, this tended to be more than most. He was her shoulder to lean on, the one person that wouldn't ever let her down. Even her twin had managed to turn his back on her during their last year at Hogwarts.

That had been the last straw. Having been told that her mother had died tragically when they were small children, it emerged last year that Lucy Avery had ended her own life. Lyra and Ailbe had been lied to for years and it hurt. It brought fresh wounds to the surface and it gave her a whole load of new questions to an already angst filled teenage mind. The poor girl didn't know who or what to believe. Her beliefs and trust had been broken and she'd had enough. Lyra had always been one to speak her mind, and this extended to her father. Their relationship had been tumultuous to say the least. Merlin, she loved him so very much and even more so that her mother wasn't around...but she could also lose it with him. Sometimes he could be so irrational and irresponsible that she found it hard to look to him respectfully. He pissed her off countless times and embarrassed her even more. Well, lying to her about how her mum had died was the nail on the coffin. Done with her family's web of lies and betrayal, her father leaving her mother for Jessica and playing their entire personal life in front of the world...never giving Lyra the privacy she needed and making love look insane. No. As soon as school was done, Lyra knew what she was going to do.

Levi. That one person that never let her down. Now she needed him more than ever, because she was cutting loose. And of course, he didn't need to think twice. Whisking her off to the rolling hillsides of the Highlands, perched between to huge rocks, was a cottage. With his quidditch contract being promised as soon as he left Hogwarts, Levi was set for money. He had told Lyra not to worry at this point and that was the last she had seen of her family.

What Lyra hadn't banked on was how this would affect her saviour. Having to be apart from his own father, friends and everything he had known. She was so wrapped up in her own anger and hurt that she hadn't stopped to think about what she was expecting of him. When he was out, she would cook for them both and try and make the cottage their home. She was trying to start over...trying to make things work without the chaos of her family and friends. Yet, she still hadn't given in to any type of romantic relationship with Levi. They had separate bedrooms, they lived like the best of friends but she tried not to notice that look in his eyes or that smile that didn't quite make it all the way. She didn't know how to even approach that...so she chose not to. Little did she know what that was doing to him either, but damn did she miss him when he wasn't here.

Currently sat in the alcove, staring out at neverending rain, Lyra was thinking. Her step-brother, Phoenix, was the only one in the family she would talk to. He was too young to be blamed for any of this and he hadn't done anything wrong. She would communicate via the odd owl and now he was asking when she would come home. Sighing heavily, the young blonde watched as a hawk hovered in for it's kill a few metres away. Soon, she knew she would have to go back, if nothing else, she needed a job. It wasn't that they were struggling but Lyra couldn't rely on Levi for everything. It just wasn't fair and as much as she was already taking liberties, this was something she could admit to and do something about. As soon as Levi got home...she would bring it up. As usual, she was waiting for him with the kettle whistling in the kitchen, her thoughts often straying in his direction.

Lyra Fowl

Levi apparated to a patch a field a little ways from the cottage he currently shared with a one Lyra Fowl. It had become habit to not just apparate right inside, he had been paranoid at being followed and leading people they'd been avoiding straight to their hideout. Then, slowly, it had become more of a stalling tactic. When they had first moved into the cozy place he had been so very excited. They were fresh out of school, he'd been signed to a major Quidditch team, and the love of his life had all but begged to take her away. Which, like the fool he was, he did. He'd found the most remote place he could find and used his signing advancement in pay to purchase it, whisking the beautiful blonde away like he'd dreamt about. Course this wasn't a dream and real life didn't follow suit, which meant that while they were sharing an abode...eating dinners together and spending quite evenings by the fire...he was still no closer to having all of her. Which had been fine in the beginning, he'd held out hope that he could win her over...specially when they were in such close quarters. But after months of her sulking, being surly, and occasionally lashing out...he started to finally feel a bit discouraged.

Sure they had good days, and he had known her long enough to know her moods and was able to overlook them, but they were few and far between. There was still a clear wall between them that he never seemed to be able to climb. Soon he found himself spending more time on the pitch, training with his team, rather than rushing straight home to spend time with Lyra. He began apparating farther from the cottage, if only to take his time walking home gathering his thoughts. He hadn't realized just how lonely he'd feel without access to his friends and family. He'd never gone a day without speaking to his own father, and nearly a year without contact was almost killing him. They'd been the best of friends since his mother left them when he was a child, leaving them to have to lean on each other to heal the hole she left, and he couldn't help but fear that he was ripping open an old wound by disappearing on him. Like making him believe history was repeating itself. It was a sickening thought. He didn't even want to begin to think how Ailbe was taking it. It was one thing to be in love with your best friends sister....it was quite another to run off with her and help her avoid her family at all costs. If they ever met up again, Levi was sure he had a black eye coming...and he would deserve it. Cause he wasn't just helping Lyra escape her problems, he was also abandoning his best friend through a hard time. They had both taken the news of the mother's real cause of death hard, dealing with it in their own ways. And sure Ailbe had chosen to be a dick and make bad decisions...but essentially Levi had chosen to side with Lyra...merlin he didn't even stop to think about Ailbe needing his support. Lyra had come to him with eyes glistening with tears and an urgency in her voice, and all rational thought had fled. All he wanted was to make it better, anyway he could.

Course now he knew that it wasn't the best decision to make. He should have made her face her problems, should have never agreed to run off. Not just because it didn't turn out like he expected, but because it wasn't really what she needed. She needed her family, her twin....even if she didn't want to admit it yet. And he....well he needed to let go. He hadn't realized just focused he'd been on Lyra until a teammate had harmlessly began to flirt with him. Sure she was a lot older, and they both knew it wouldn't progress to anything more than flirting, but the thrill of knowing that someone thought he was attractive was a wakeup call. He had spent so much time basking in the presence of someone who would never return his feelings, that he had forgotten what it was like to actually receive appreciative looks. It stabbed at his heart a little, never wanting to think ill of Lyra, but he was finally coming to see that she wasn't the all perfect creation that he had previously envisioned. She was selfish and she was using him. She knew that she only had ask it of him and she could get whatever she wanted, knew how he felt about her and chose to abuse those feelings. Taking and taking but never giving anything in return. A few dinners here and there and housework were not equal payment to all the things she'd ask of him, simply knowing that he'd deliver. Though it hurt like hell to admit it, he was finally done with it. If she truly didn't want his affections more than just a way to get what she wanted, well then he was done holding out for her. She may not want him, but someone out there surely had to and he wasn't going to just wait around anymore.

Feeling bitter about the whole thing, thinking too long on it only brought on anger, Levi finally made it to the small cottage. Steeling himself for whatever mood she was in tonight, he tore open the door with a little more force than necessary. It was going to be a long night, but it was finally time that they had an overdue talk. Whether or not she was ready, he was going back home. No matter what. And if she wanted to wallow in her own pity party...well she could find her own place to do it, because he wasn't going to be her safety blanket anymore. It was time to move on, to be the adults that they supposedly were. Shucking off his coat and throwing it onto the dining table, he turned to look at the blonde with a determined expression. It was now or never. "Lyra we need to talk."

Levi Mrotek

Having braced herself for having to swallow a huge amount of pride, Lyra had now moved to the kitchen to keep her hands busy so that her mind didn’t go into panic mode and back out of what she had spent all day planning. That was how it usually went of course. Often, the most sensible, obvious idea would come to her almost immediately; but as soon as it did, it got drowned out by the fear in her head. The ‘fear’ took on a mask of ego and self-righteousness. It wasn’t especially attractive for anyone, but it was a strong monster to fight. The smaller voice inside could just not compete with it.

Until today, that was. Phoenix’s letter had softened the blonde a little. That protective shroud was only causing herself and others pain. It wasn’t doing it’s job anymore. Instead of protecting her, it was isolating her and pushing people she loved away. Really, it had been doing that for years but Lyra had only just seen it for what it was.
As she was preparing some crumpets, the young woman heard Levi return. Only, she doubted it was her friend…he never made that much noise. As the door flew open and caused the girl to jump just slightly, that mind of hers began creating another story. Her father had found her…or maybe Ailbe. Either way, she wasn’t about to give herself up on their terms. All of this managed to go through her head in about two seconds before she saw a very familiar coat thrown onto their table. Levi?
The ex-gryffindor was known for his gentle ways and tolerance. Lyra had never seen him behave in this manner and she wasn’t actually sure how to react. She didn't approach him with a hug as she normally did, but kept her distance. The girl was stubborn but she was far from stupid. Something wasn't right and she was pretty sure that right now, a hug would only do more damage. "Lyra, we need to talk"

The fear was back, but it wasn't taking it's usual form of arrogance and indifference. Lyra felt her stomach tighten in the most uncomfortable way. Was it possible for your heart to beat this fast and be perfectly healthy? Her lips parted but no words came out. Fight or flight was kicking in, but Lyra didn't know it. Half of her was screaming to just run. Avoid this conversation...get out...all the red flags and alarms were going off in her head. Yet, the other half, the 'fight' was keeping her rooted to the spot. Tell him! Tell him how you really feel and that you want to go back. Make it alright and swallow that fucking pride!

"About what?" She'd bottled it again. Now the voice was telling her she'd regret this moment for the rest of her life. You had one chance and blew it because you'll always be this way and nothing is ever going to change. Merlin, she was so desperate to fight for him, but making herself vulnerable was just an impossible task for this eighteen year old. Lyra waited for the inevitable now...almost playing out the next few minutes before they happened.
